The estate remained in trust until 1931 when it passed to the present Lord Inglewood's father, William Vane, who was a distant cousin (see Vane family). Nephew of the 9th Lord Barnard, he was the son of Colonel Hon WL Vane and Lady Katharine Pakenham, daughter of the 4th Earl of Longford.

William Vane was elected MP for Westmorland in 1945, was a junior minister in Harold Macmillan's government, and was created Lord Inglewood in 1964. His wife Mary was the eldest daughter of Sir Richard Proby Bt of Elton Hall, Peterborough.
