Garden Blog Feb 2010
Hi fellow gardeners
After one of the coldest Januarys I can recall, it’s great to see the lawns again rather than acres of snow. Even with the bad weather the keen gardeners work continues, so I took the opportunity to prune the fruit trees and all the roses.
Now I will be turning my attentions to the kitchen garden. Our seed potatoes are safely chitting away in the potting shed and all the veg seed is on order. This is all very well but the soil still has to be prepared. February is a good time to turn the soil if the weather allows, do not try to dig if the soil is too wet or if there is frost in the ground as this can damage the structure of the soil. The advantage of getting the soil turned this early in the year means that any further frosts will help to break down any large clods, especially handy on heavy clay .
So as soon as the sun shines get those spades and forks out because HOPEFULLY spring is around the corner, and we all know that fresh produce from your own garden is not only good for the body but also the soul.
Happy gardening
Kevin.
